It is necessary to renew the passport before it gets expired or shortly after expiry based on the requirements of the particular country. However, many people may have the confusion regarding the residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) renewal. They may also have the following questions.
Should I have to renew my residence permit in Germany or will it get automatically renewed with the new passport?
Can I travel to Germany with the old passport and the old residence permit?

Renewing the residence permit
Since your residence permit is linked with your passport, its validity is also the same as your passport validity. So, it is mandatory to renew the residence permit using the new passport. The new residence permit will get validity based on your visa status.
Example
If someone has a Permanent Residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), then the residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) will get the same validity as the new passport.
Auto-renewal of residence permit?
It’s not possible to automatically renew your residence permit. It’s a manual process. You should go through the general residence permit renewal process which is followed in your city. So make sure that you have initiated the process at the right time to avoid any issues.
Possibility to renew passport in the home country
You can renew your passport in your home country if you have enough validity in your old passport and your residence permit is also valid during the time of entry to Germany. You can apply for a new residence permit after coming to Germany with your new passport. In this case, it is necessary to carry your old passport with you.
Traveling with a new passport and old Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) card
It is possible to enter Germany with your new passport and old residence permit. Having a new passport will not affect your entry to Germany as long as your old passport and residence permit are not expired. In this case, it is not really necessary to have the new passport number in the existing residence permit card.
Note
This is not valid for the people who have asylum status / Permits.
