You can fill and apply for an Indian passport easily by following the step by step process shown below. Your passport application can be processed at any PSK/POPSK/PSLK within India irrespective of your residential address. That means you can work somewhere in the country but you can still apply for a passport in your hometown.

Creating an account

This detailed step-by-step process is based on the application form filled on the Passport Seva website. The process is the same for a fresh passport (new passport) and re-issue of a passport (passport renewal).

To apply for a passport, it is necessary to create an account on the Passport Seva website. Follow the steps below to create a new account.

  • Select “New User Registration”.
  • Select the following details
    • Register to apply at CPV Delhi or Passport Office
  • If you have selected Passport office, then add the following information
    • Passport Office
    • Given Name
    • Surname
    • Date of Birth
    • E-mail Id
    • Do you want your Login Id to be same as E-mail Id? Yes or No
    • Login Id
    • Password
    • Confirm Password
    • Hint Question
    • Hint Answer
  • Enter Characters Displayed and then click register to create an account.

Once you have registered, the activation link will be sent to your provided registered email address. Open the email to “Click and activate the account”. Once it is activated, enter the login id, password, and captcha to log in. Once you have successfully logged in, you can start filling out the form as shown below.

General Information

  1. It is necessary to fill only the mandatory fields that are marked with *. You can ignore other fields throughout filling out the application form.
  1. You can save your application anytime while filling it by clicking “Save my details”. You will get the following information.

Your application form has been saved successfully.
Note: Please submit the complete application form by clicking the Submit Form button. Your application will not be entertained until it has been submitted successfully.

Fill application form

  • Click “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport” on the application home.

I, the holder of above mentioned Aadhaar Number , hereby give my consent to Passport Seva to obtain my Aadhaar Number, Name and Fingerprint/Iris for authentication with UIDAI. I have no objection using my identity and biometric information for validation with Aadhaar (CIDR) database only for the purpose of authentication.

  • Since applicant is minor, enter the following details.
    • Father/Legal Guardian’s File/Passport Number

    • Mother/Legal Guardian’s Nationality, if not Indian

Note:
If either parent holds a valid passport with spouse name endorsed, passport will be issued to the minor without any police verification. Original passport of parent(s) should be presented for the verification of particulars.
If parent(s) hold a valid passport, but spouse name is not endorsed, then they must get the spouse name added in their passport. For this they have to apply for a reissue of passport and get the specified change in personal particulars. Processing of minor’s passport would be much faster if the parents apply for endorsement of spouse name along with the minors passport application form.
Write the nationality of the minors parent(s) or legal guardian if it is other than Indian.

    • Has a warrant for your arrest been issued by a court under any law for the time being in force?
    • Has an order prohibiting your departure from India been made by any court?
  1. Provide the following details if the applicant has been convicted by a court in India.
    • Have you at, any time during the period of five years immediately preceding the date of this application been convicted by a court in India for offence involving moral turpitude and sentenced in respect thereof to imprisonment for not less than two years?
  1. Provide the following details if the applicant has been refused/denied passport.
    • Have you ever been refused/denied passport?

  1. Provide the following details if applicant has applied for or been granted foreign citizenship.
    • Have you ever been granted citizenship by any other country?

    • Have you ever applied for renunciation of Indian citizenship?
  1. Provide the following details if applicant has returned to India on Emergency Certificate.
    • Have you ever returned to India on Emergency Certificate (EC)?
    • Have you ever been deported from any region/country?
    • Have you ever been repatriated from any country back to India?

This section is very important. Have a look at every detail like spelling, address, space between names, etc, which you see in the sample passport. If there are some modifications, you can still do it by clicking the “<<Prev” button. Do not click next and submit the application if there are some errors in the application. The details on this page will be printed on your original passport.

The following fields will be empty in the sample passport. So don’t get confused by looking at that.

Self Declaration

The selected documents (not shared through DigiLocker) need to be submitted to PSK/Passport Office for verification.

Proof of Birth

You can submit one of the following documents as proof of birth.

  1. Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other prescribed authority,whosoever has been empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969 to register the birth of a child born in India
  2. Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/recognised educational board
  3. Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
  4. Copy of an extract of the service record of the applicant (only in respect of Government servants) or the Pay Pension Order (in respect of retired Government Servants), duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of the Administration of the concerned Ministry/Department of the applicant
  5. Aadhaar Card/E-Aadhaar
  6. Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) issued by the Election Commission of India
  7. PAN Card issued by the Income Tax Department
  8. Driving License issued by the Transport department of concerned state Government
  9. A declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on their official letter head of the organization confirming the DOB of the applicant

Proof of present residential address

You can submit one of the following documents as proof of present residential address.

  1. Water Bill
  2. Telephone (landline or post paid mobile bill)
  3. Electricity bill
  4. Income Tax Assessment Order
  5. Election Commission Photo ID card
  6. Proof of Gas Connection
  7. Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
  8. Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page including family details mentioning applicant’s name as spouse of the passport holder), (provided the applicant’s present address matches the address mentioned in the spouse’s passport)
  9. Parent’s passport copy, in case of minors(First and last page)
  10. Aadhaar Card
  11. Rent Agreement
  12. Photo Passbook of running Bank Account (Scheduled Public Sector Banks, Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks and Regional Rural Banks only)

Once you have selected the proof of birth and present residential address, you can preview the application form and then submit the form. You can print the application form. Once you have printed, i.e. saved as a pdf in your drive, you can click OK on the below popup message.

Note

You can also print the document later. So, no need to worry if you haven’t saved the document.

Pay and Schedule Appointment

You will get the below 3 options.

  • Schedule Appointment
  • Print Application Receipt
  • Attachment Upload

You can proceed with the default appointment which was automatically selected or you can also choose the appointment as per your convenience.

  • Click “Pay and Book Appointment”.
  • It is possible to pay using a credit or debit card. Alternatively, it is also possible pay using challan.
  • Follow the procedures to make the payment.

Problem with the online payment

If you have paid and if it is not reflected in the process status, do not worry. You can reverify the payment. If the process is still not reflecting, try to verify after few hours. I have the same issue and the payment was successful after a few hours.

Scheduling an appointment after payment

You can schedule an appointment only after the successful payment. If the payment was not successful, wait until it is successful. Repeat the payment only if the payment is shown as failed.

You will see the below popup message. Click OK to proceed to book an appointment.

Once the payment status is successful, you can schedule an appointment.

Scheduling an appointment

Once the appointment is booked successfully, you will receive an SMS on the given mobile number. The SMS is enough to enter the passport office. Alternatively, you can also use the application receipt as shown below.

The SMS contains the following information.

  • Name of the applicant
  • Batch and sequence number
  • Application Reference Number (ARN)
  • Passport type
  • Date and time of reporting
  • Fees details

Print application receipt

You can print the application receipt with the appointment details. However, it is not mandatory to carry for the passport appointment.
