It is common in Germany to use the same water for drinking, washing, bathing, etc. The water also contains lime deposit. That means, it is hard water and it will be difficult for many of us.

Drinking water in Germany

Is it safe to drink water from the tap directly?

Yes, it is safe to drink the water from the tap.

The water hardness is measured in German degree of hardness (Grad deutscher Härte” (°dH)). Tap water in German will be suitable for drinking purpose. If it is mentioned somewhere that the water is not drinking water, do not drink that water.

Why it is suggested use the water filter?

The lime deposit (Kalk in German) in Germany is high compared to the water which we drunk in India. It also depends on the place. Water is at least not so good in my place.

You can easily find the lime deposits while boiling the tap water. In most cases, it will form a layer at the top. If you use a water heater for a long time without cleaning, you can find the deposits at the bottom and also on the other parts. So it is better to use a water filter.

There are different types of water filters available in Germany. We can use based on our needs.

Water filter for a single person or a small family

Filter jug

The water filter jug is one of the most convenient filters to use. It needs only one cartridge which lasts for one month based on our usage. This water jug filter is available in different sizes.

• 2.8 litres (1.3 litres filtered water)
• 3.5 litres (2 litres filtered water)
• 4.2 litres (2.2 litres filtered water), etc

The filter cost varies based on the product, the number of cartridges included. The average price is 22€.

Table water filter

The table water filter is suitable for the family. It is pretty big and needs a special place at the house.

• 8.2 litres (5.2 litres filtered water)

The water filter costs approximately 40€ and it needs one cartridge for a month.

Water Filter for Tap

There are also water filters available which you can fit directly on the tap. It costs approximately 57€.

These types of water filters are best to carry while going out. It is also useful to take to the office. There are bottles available in different sizes.

My experience

I am using a Brita water filter jug for 3 years and I’m highly satisfied with that. This is a jug type filter that needs a water filter cartridge. One cartridge is enough for one month. It also varies based on our usage. There is an automatic indication for changing the cartridge. But I would suggest replacing the cartridge once the taste gets changed.

I usually but the cartridge in Kaufland when there is an offer or on Amazon. In general, I pay approximately 25€ for 6 cartridges.

Cleaning the water filter is quite simple. I would suggest cleaning at least twice a month.

Alternative for water filter

If you do not like water filter or if you feel it’s not comfortable to carry the water everywhere, you can also buy mineral water. It is also important to know about the different water types which are available in Germany supermarket.
