Lost wallet? – Next steps to do
Block cards
It is very important to block all the missing cards so that the card is not being misused or unauthorized persons cannot access your money. You can do it by calling the customer service of your bank or also possible to do it online.
Report to the police
The next important step is to report to the police and get their acknowledgment. You might need this for other purposes.
Passport and identity documents
In case you have missed or lost your passport and identity documents like residence permit, or driving license, it is necessary to inform the German consulate and apply for temporary identity documents. If you have lost within Germany, you should also inform the town hall (Rathaus) regarding this.
How to get emergency cash?
Some banks offer customers a special service called emergency cash (Notfallbargeld). You can find out whether such an emergency cash service is possible for your account at your bank on the website of your bank. Alternatively, you can also call the service hotline and ask.
The withdrawal of money is not necessarily tied to a bank branch. Depending on the country you are traveling in, the money may be brought to your hotel or you may receive the payment in local shops, just follow your bank’s instructions. Since an ID card is usually required for the collection, you must first apply for a replacement document with which you can identify yourself – if you have lost your identity card and/or your passport in addition to your cash and cards.
How much do you get?
Depending on the bank, it could be between 1000 to 1500 euros. Some bank needs a special type of bank account to avail of this facility. So, check with your bank regarding further information.
Suggestion
Keep some emergency cash outside of the purse. This will help if your debit card, credit card, or money has been lost or stolen. It is always better to separate the cash or cards and keep it in different bags rather than keeping them in a single place.
